Abstract

I will first discuss my Ph.D. on multi-agent systems and environmental modeling. I will give a high-level introduction to opinion dynamics and explain how I used game theory and network approaches to model the feedback loop between social polarization and climate change negotiations, investigating phenomena like the "oscillatory tragedy of the commons."

Next, I will introduce my current postdoctoral work with Julien M. Hendrickx and Gianluca Bianchin on robust control and optimization. We are adapting the Performance Estimation Problem (PEP) framework, which was originally developed for analyzing optimization algorithms, to evaluate control systems. I will show how we use this framework to quantify the exact finite-horizon robustness of Linear Quadratic Regulators (LQR) under LTI uncertainties by reformulating the worst-case search as a Semidefinite Program.

Abstract

Doctoral dissertation defense covering the main subject of my thesis manuscript. After an introduction of the different approaches we explored: game-theoretic climate negotiations, opinion dynamics coupled with environmental dynamics. I present in details the analysis of nonlinear opinion dynamics Continuous Opinion Signaled Action (COSA) as well as the emergence of consensus and polarization phenomena on complex networks for this system. The model is described by the following differential equation:

\[\dot{x}_i = -x_i + \beta r(E) + (1-\beta) \frac{1}{d_i} \sum_{ j \in \mathcal{V}} a_{ij} s(x_j)\] where \(x_i \in [0, 1]\) is the opinion of agent \(i\), \(\beta \in [0, 1]\) is the weight of the environmental feedback, \(r(E)\) is the global environmental state response, and \(a_{ij}\) is the adjacency matrix of the network.
